Fishing in Holland

  • 1. What is Fishing in Holland?
Especially for foreigners, Sportvisserij Nederland launched www.fishinginholland.nl. Here foreign and Dutch anglers can find all important information – the best fishing spots, the best accommodations, regulations and much more – about angling in the Netherlands; in English and German. In other words, this is your go-to website if you’re planning a fishing holiday in The Netherlands!

License (VISpas)

  • 1. For Whom is the VISpas intended?
In most cases, anglers require the VISpas if they want to go fishing in the Netherlands. The VISpas is automatically provided after you become a member of a fishing club associated with one of the Sportvisserij Nederland fishing federations. This allows you to fish with a maximum of two rods and all permitted types of bait in the waters that are shared through the Gezamenlijke Lijst van Nederlandse VISwateren (Joint List of Dutch fishing waters), or that are listed on the free VISplanner. In addition to www.visplanner.nl, this is where you will find all the waters that the clubs, federations and Sportvisserij Nederland have shared with each other.

Do the VISpas check to establish the card you will need.

In some cases, additional restrictions have been included, such as the prohibition against using certain types of bait during a certain period of time, or the requirement for a permit in relation to the right of way. If this is the case, this is indicated on www.visplanner.nl or the separate lists of fishing waters.

A closed time applies for certain fish species. If you catch one of these fish during this period, you are obliged to handle it with the utmost care and immediately return it to the water it came from, alive and unharmed.

  • 2. Does the VISpas provide permission to go fishing anywhere I want?
No, unfortunately you are not permitted to fish anywhere you want, but you can fish in all of the waters included in the various Lists of fishing waters issued as part of the VISpas: the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and possibly a club list of fishing waters. Today this includes over 90% of Dutch waters. These waters are marked in dark blue on the VISplanner (www.visplanner.nl) and the free VISplanner app.

Fishing clubs and federations hire fishing rights under lease agreements with municipalities, district water boards and the Department of Waterways and Public Works. In addition to their own members, VISpas holders who are members of another club would also like to be able to fish in these waters. This is possible if the entity that holds the fishing rights concerned has shared the water in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters – and thus in the VISpas.

Fishing with one VISpas throughout the Netherlands is one of the main questions of our members and a spearhead in our policy. Today fishing in over 90% of the waters in the Netherlands is permitted with a VISpas of any club, and new waters are added on a monthly basis.

  • 3. Does my VISpas entitle me to use three rods and to go night fishing?
In some Dutch waters, night fishing is permitted throughout the year. A NachtVIStoestemming (Night Fishing Permit) is required for this, in addition to the VISpas. If you wish to fish using three rods, you will need the Derde Hengeltoestemming (Third Rod Permit). Both are available online at www.vispas.nl

Night fishing is permitted in all waters with the little moon as a symbol in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner. ‘Night fishing’ is taken to mean: fishing between two hours after sunset and one hour before sunrise. Note: deviating rules may apply, in nature reserves in particular!

Both the Night Fishing Permit and Third Rod Permit comprise a hologram sticker to be applied at the back of the VISpas. A combined hologram sticker is available if you require both additional permits.

The Night Fishing Permit and Third Rod Permit are valid throughout the calendar year and are strictly personal. If, as a VISpas holder, you have more than one VISpas, you only have to purchase the permit/permits once. Symbols in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner indicate where both permits are valid.

The JeugdVISpas (Youth VISpas) combined with the Night Fishing Permit entitles the holder to go night fishing. Persons under 16 are only permitted to night fish when supervised by a person aged 16 or older.
In addition, a fishing club may issue separate permits for its members. If a water is not included in the Joint List, please refer to the club’s list to find out how night fishing and the use of the third rod are regulated. Night fishing is permitted if the water is in the club list and nothing is stated about night fishing.

  • 4. What rules are anglers to comply with?
Holders of the VISpas must comply with the following General Terms and Conditions and legal rules and regulations when angling in the waters included in this list. Non-compliance with the conditions and legal rules and regulations is considered as fishing without a permit (written permission) and thus constitutes a breach of the Fisheries Act. This may result in a fine.

Here you will find the general terms and conditions.

  • 5. Where do I buy the VISpas?
The VISpas is easily available at www.vispas.nl. You can pay using IDEAL, Mastercard, Bancontact, PayPal and VISA. After payment, you will immediately receive a temporary proof of membership in your e-mail box.

The VISpas is the proof of membership of a fishing club. The VISplanner and lists of fishing waters indicate where you can fish. You must be a member of a club in order to obtain the VISpas. If you are not yet a member of a club, you can buy the VISpas online or at a fishing club.

The point of sale will provide you with a Voorlopig Bewijs van Lidmaatschap (Temporary Proof of Membership), the top of which constitutes permission to go fishing. It is valid for one month. Send the lower part (Aanvraag Definitief Lidmaatschap (Application for Final Membership)) to Sportvisserij Nederland so we can prepare the VISpas for you. Your VISpas will be sent to you within 10 working days after receiving the ‘Aanvraag Definitief Lidmaatschap’.

Age and the fishing club selected determine the costs for the VISpas; the average price is about €35.00 per membership year.

  • 6. I do not see my local fishing club on www.vispas.nl, what can I do?
The VISpas is the proof of membership of a club. It ensures that you can go fishing locally and continue to do so. In addition, the clubs hold activities for their members.

Most clubs register members via www.vispas.nl. Some clubs, however, do not (yet) do this. It is best to contact the local fishing club for an alternative manner of registration.

Find the contact details via the address finder.
  • 7. What are the costs of a VISpas?
Your age and the fishing club selected establish the costs for the VISpas; the average price is about €35.00 per membership year. Your club may also charge a one-time registration fee for new members.

You will receive the VISpas after becoming a member of a fishing club. It is valid until 31 December of the current year. The costs of a VISpas consist of a national contribution to Sportvisserij Nederland, a federal contribution for the regional representation of interests and the contribution to the club.

If you also become a member of another fishing club, you do not have to pay the contributions to Sportvisserij Nederland and the federation, but only the costs for the preparation of the Extra VISpas (€3.50) and the membership fee of the club in question. The Extra VISpas can be requested directly at www.vispas.nl. You can request a refund of any double payment via our website.

  • 8. If I buy the VISpas later in the year, why do I have to pay for the entire year?
Membership of the VISpas is valid for one calendar year, so membership runs from 1 January to 31 December of any year. The year is shown in at the top right of the VISpas.

Most clubs send invoices to their members in November/December, after which the VISpas can be paid and the document is received before 1 January. Members can thus enjoy fishing throughout the year and at limited costs.
  • 9. Can Sportvisserij Nederland transfer my membership to another fishing club?
The VISpas is the proof of membership of a fishing club. Each club has its own statutes, regulations and club membership fee. This means that Sportvisserij Nederland cannot transfer your membership to another club. The only way to switch is by resigning your membership of one club and becoming a member of another.

This means that, for the current calendar year, you will remain a member of the fishing club, of which you have resigned your membership. If you terminate your membership prior to 1 October, your membership ends on 31 December.

However, the board of your fishing club may decide to refund the money if, for example, you have accidentally registered with the wrong club. Sportvisserij Nederland will always try to help you in cases like these by not passing the VISpas on to the club in question, provided that the VISpas in question is returned to Sportvisserij Nederland. A fishing club can refund the payment without any financial consequences.

However, the decision on whether or not to refund the contribution always lies with the board of the fishing club, and Sportvisserij Nederland has no say in this.

Please refer to the address finder for a club’s contact information.

Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl to resign your membership.
  • 10. How do I get the Extra VISpas?
The VISpas provides permission to fish in many Dutch waters. For some waters, you will require the VISpas of a specific fishing club because their water is not shared nationally, or only partly shared nationally. This is clarified at www.visplanner.nl; in some cases, you are required to become a member of another fishing club as well.

Easily order the Extra VISpas from another club at www.vispas.nl by selecting ‘Extra VISpas’. The Extra VISpas can only be ordered if the VISpas has already been paid for.

  • 11. When will I receive my VISpas?
The following applies to existing members:
If you pay prior to 5 December, you will receive the VISpas before 1 January. If you pay by direct debit, you will receive the new VISpas for the next calendar year as early as mid-December.

Sportvisserij Nederland assists many clubs in dealing with their membership records and sends the VISpas three weeks after payment. Following payment, temporary proof of membership will be ready for you at Mijnsportvisserij.

A limited number of fishing clubs issue the VISpas to their members themselves. Sportvisserij Nederland delivers the VISpasses to them in late November, and it is up to them to decide when they issue the VISpasses to their members. Some do this on their regular members’ evenings, while others send them by post.

In mid-November, anglers who are not a member of a fishing club will receive a giro form from Sportvisserij Nederland to pay for the Kleine VISpas (Limited VISpas). If they pay in good time, they will receive their Kleine VISpas prior to 1 January of the new year.

The following applies to new members:
Members who have recently ordered the VISpas online or in the shop and have received a Voorlopig Bewijs van Lidmaatschap (VBL; temporary proof of membership) for this purpose, can view the status of their order via ‘status aanvraag’ (status of your request).

A VBL is valid for one month and provides immediate permission to go fishing. You will generally receive the final VISpas within three weeks. Note: if you have ordered the VISpas online, you will automatically receive a VBL by e-mail. This may have ended up in your ‘Junk E-mail’ folder.

If you have not received the VISpas within three weeks, please send an e-mail with your question, name and address details and VBL number to vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

  • 12. How do I cancel the VISpas?
Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl to indicate that you wish to resign your membership (the VISpas). The VISpas is the proof of membership of the club, which is printed on the front of the VISpas.

Request a duplicate of your VISpas at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl. Note: €3.50 is charged if you order a duplicate of a document. So if you also have a Night Fishing Permit, €7.00 will be charged: €3.50 for the duplicate of the VISpas and (€3.50) for the duplicate of the Night Fishing Permit.

Apply for your duplicate as follows:
    1.Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.

Following your request you will receive a duplicate of your VISpas, including the invoice, within five working days. If, according to our membership records, you have not yet paid, we can refer you to your club to request a duplicate from them. They can arrange this for you.

  • 16. How do I contact my fishing club?
The VISpas is the proof of membership of a club. Your club locally ensures that you can continue to fish locally. In addition, the clubs hold activities for their members. Find the contact details via the address finder.
  • 17. My question is not included, what do I do?
If your question is not included, please send it to us at vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

Night fishing / Third rod

  • 1. Where can I buy the permit/permits?
NOTE: JeugdVISpas holders are only permitted to go night fishing when supervised by an adult.

The NachtVIStoestemming (Night Fishing Permit: €10.00) and Derde Hengeltoestemming (Third Rod Permit: €25.00) permits are easily ordered at www.vispas.nl.

After payment you will immediately receive a temporary proof by e-mail you can use to go fishing.

Night fishing and/or the use of three rods is only permitted in the waters with a symbol in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner. ‘Night fishing’ is taken to mean: fishing between two hours after sunset and one hour before sunrise. Deviating rules may apply in nature reserves!
  • 2. I have not received my sticker yet.
2.I have not received my sticker yet.
If you buy a Night Fishing Permit or Third Rod Permit online, you will generally receive the sticker at home within three weeks. The temporary document you receive by e-mail is valid for a maximum of one month, and you can start fishing using this document.

If you have indicated that you wish to use direct debit, you will automatically receive the sticker by post prior to 1 January. Please note that this will be sent separately to the VISpas/VISpasses.

After payment, a temporary proof will be ready for you at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.
  • 3. Can I fish during the night or using three rods everywhere I want?
The Night Fishing Permit and Third Rod Permit are valid for the entire calendar year and are strictly personal. If, as a VISpas holder, you have more than one VISpasses, you only need to purchase the permit/permits once. Symbols in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner indicate where both permits are valid. This means that the Night Fishing Permit does not provide permission to fish everywhere during the night.

Night fishing is permitted in all waters with the moon symbol in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner. ‘Night fishing’ is taken to mean: fishing between two hours after sunset and one hour before sunrise. Deviating rules may apply in nature reserves!

In the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters the symbol indicates whether a third rod is permitted for fishing. If you have the VISpas and Third Rod Permit and you see the 3 symbol, you are permitted to fish in this water using a third rod.
  • 4. What rules must I comply with when I go fishing or night fishing?
Holders of the VISpas must comply with the following General Terms and Conditions and legal rules and regulations when angling in the waters included in this list. Non-compliance with the conditions and legal rules and regulations is considered as fishing without a permit (written permission) and thus constitutes fishing in breach of the Fisheries Act. This may result in a fine.
  • 5. I am unable to order a permit through www.vispas.nl, what do I do?
If you have issued a direct debit, the amount for the Night Night Fishing Permit and/or the Third Rod Permit will be automatically debited by the end of the year (early November), and you will generally receive the sticker at home before 1 January. Note: this will be sent separately from the VISpas.

Once the payment has been made, you will automatically be assigned the ‘paid’ feature. From that moment on it is no longer possible to re-order the permit or permits online. The document will not be shown in the order process after you have logged in with your details.

If you have not paid and ordering online fails, please contact us at nachtvissenderdehengel@vispas.nl.

You can also issue a direct debit authorisation by e-mailing your IBAN and VISpas number to nachtvissenderdehengel@vispas.nl.

    3. Select ‘VISpassen’ in the menu (start by linking your VISpasses to your account if required).
    4. Under ‘Acties’, select ‘Opzeggen’ (Cancel) for the document you wish to cancel.

    1. Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.
    2. Register or log in.
    3. Select ‘VISpassen’ in the menu (start by linking your VISpasses to your account if required).

    5. Please provide your new postcode and house number with the effective date of your move.

After completed the form, you will receive an automatic confirmation by e-mail and the change will be processed.
  • 8. I have lost my permit, what can I do?
Request a duplicate of your VISpas at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl. Note: €3.50 is charged if you order a duplicate of a document. So if you also have a Night Fishing Permit, €7.00 will be charged: €3.50 for the duplicate of the VISpas and (€3.50) for the duplicate of the Night Fishing Permit.

Apply for your duplicate as follows:

JeugdVISpas (Youth VISpas)

  • 1. What document do children require?
Children under the age of 14, reference date 1 January, are permitted to fish without a document, provided that they are accompanied by an adult who has the proper document. In this case, children are permitted to fish with one rod under the same conditions as their supervisor.

If a child goes fishing on their own, they require a youth permit or the club’s JeugdVISpas, which means that they will become a member of a fishing club. If you are fishing with one rod and designated types of bait (not predatory fish), a youth permit will generally suffice. With this youth permit, fishing is permitted in club waters.

However, the JeugdVISpas gives permission to fish almost anywhere, with two rods, and also for predatory fish.

You can easily become a member of a fishing club at www.vispas.nl or at a fishing club and/or angling shop or specialist pet shop in your neighbourhood. They can be found at search for club.
  • 2. What am I permitted to do with the JeugdVISpas?
The JeugdVISpas is automatically issued after you become a member of a club associated with one of the fishing federations of Sportvisserij Nederland. This gives permission to fish with two rods and all permitted types of bait in the waters that have been shared through the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters, or which are listed on the VISplanner. This list includes all of the waters clubs, federations and sport fishing Netherlands have shared.

The VISplanner (www.visplanner.nl and the free VISplanner app) is a legal permit if combined with the VISpas. If you have the VISplanner on your mobile telephone or tablet/laptop, you can demonstrate that you are permitted to fish at a certain location if you are checked.
  • 3. Can I fish anywhere with the JeugdVISpas?
The JeugdVISpas provides permission to fish on many waters, but not all of them. You are permitted to fish in all waters that are included in the various Lists of fishing waters that you have received with your JeugdVISpas – the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and club list. Today this includes over 90% of Dutch waters. These waters are marked dark blue on the VISplanner (www.visplanner.nl and the free VISplanner app).

Fishing clubs and federations hire fishing rights under lease agreements with municipalities, district water boards and the Department of Waterways and Public Works. In addition to their own members, JeugdVISpas holders who are members of another club are interested in fishing in these waters. This is possible if the entity that holds the fishing rights concerned has shared the water in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters – and thus in the JeugdVISpas.

Today fishing in over 90% of the waters in the Netherlands is permitted with a JeugdVISpas of any club.
  • 4. Does my JeugdVISpas entitle me to use three rods or to go night fishing?
The JeugdVISpas (Youth VISpas) combined with the Night Fishing Permit entitles the holder to go night fishing. Persons under 16 are only permitted to night fish when supervised by a person aged 16 or older.

In some Dutch waters, night fishing is permitted throughout the year. A Night Fishing Permit is required for this, in addition to the JeugdVISpas.

Deviating rules may apply in nature reserves!

If, as a JeugdVISpas holder, you have more than one JeugdVISpas, the additional permit/permits have to be purchased just once. Symbols in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters and the VISplanner indicate where both permits are valid.

In addition, a fishing club may issue separate permits for its members. If a water is not included in the Joint List, please refer to the club’s list to find out how night fishing and the use of the third rod are regulated. Night fishing is permitted if the water is in the club list and nothing is stated about night fishing.
  • 5. What rules must I comply with?
When fishing, handle fish respectfully and properly consider the waters and environment. In addition to legal regulations, various other rules apply to JeugdVISpas holders. You may be fined if you fail to adhere to the regulations.
  • 6. Where do I buy the JeugdVISpas?
The JeugdVISpas is easily available at www.vispas.nl. You can pay using IDEAL, Mastercard, Bancontact, PayPal and VISA.

The JeugdVISpas is the proof of membership of a club. The VISplanner and lists of fishing waters indicate where you can fish. You must be a member of a club in order to obtain the JeugdVISpas. If you are not yet a member of a club, you can buy the JeugdVISpas online or at the fishing club and/or angling shop/pet specialist shop in your vicinity.

The point of sale will provide you with a Voorlopig Bewijs van Lidmaatschap (Temporary Proof of Membership), the top of which constitutes permission to go fishing. It is valid for one month. Send the lower part (Aanvraag Definitief Lidmaatschap (Application for Final Membership)) to Sportvisserij Nederland so we can prepare the JeugdVISpas for you. Your JeugdVISpas will be sent to you within 10 working days after receiving the ‘Aanvraag Definitief Lidmaatschap’.

The costs of the JeugdVISpas depend on the fishing club selected; the average price is about €20.00.
  • 7. I do not see my local fishing club on www.vispas.nl, what can I do?
The JeugdVISpas is proof of membership of a club, and your club ensures that you can go fishing locally and continue to do so. In addition, the clubs hold activities for their members.

Most clubs register members via www.vispas.nl, but some clubs do not or not yet do this. It is best to contact the local fishing club for an alternative manner of registration.

Find the contact details via the address finder.
  • 8. What does a JeugdVISpas cost?
The costs of the JeugdVISpas are established by the fishing club selected; the average price is about €20.00. Your club may also charge a one-time registration fee for new members.

You will receive the JeugdVISpas after becoming a member of a fishing club. It is valid until 31 December of the current year. The costs of a JeugdVISpas consist of a national contribution to Sportvisserij Nederland, a federal contribution for the regional representation of interests and the contribution to the club.
  • 9. If I buy a JeugdVISpas later in the year, why do I have to pay for the entire year?
Membership of the JeugdVISpas is valid for one calendar year, so membership runs from 1 January to 31 December of any year. The year is shown in at the top right of the JeugdVISpas.

However, practice has demonstrated that groups do not go fishing until around June, when temperatures go up. These people decide to go fishing later in the year, instead of spending time by the waterside all year through. Some anglers only fish in autumn because of the predatory fishing season. In addition there are tourists who make use of the JeugdVISpas for a week or so. They pay the same contribution, but fish over fewer months compared to other anglers. We do not consider the frequency of fishing, and people who fish once only pay the same amount as members who fish on a daily basis.

It is more difficult to issue JeugdVISpasses that are valid as per the payment date, in which case most anglers receive a JeugdVISpas 2019, while the other quarter will receive a JeugdVISpas 2019/2020 that is valid until 1-6-2020 and the other one until 1-9-2020, for example. This considerably increases the risk of errors and will cause the price of the JeugdVISpas to go up.

Most clubs send invoices to their members in November/December, after which the JeugdVISpas can be paid and the document is received prior to 1 January. Members can thus enjoy fishing throughout the year and at limited costs.
  • 10. Can Sportvisserij Nederland transfer my membership to another fishing club?
The JeugdVISpas is proof of membership of a fishing club. Each club has its own rules for entering into and resigning membership. In addition, they apply their own contribution rates, which prevents Sportvisserij Nederland from directly transferring your membership to another club. The only way to switch is by resigning your membership of one club and becoming a member of another.

This means that for the current year you will remain a member of the fishing club you have selected. If you terminate your membership prior to 1 October, your membership ends on 31 December.

However, the board of your fishing club may decide to refund the money if, for example, you have accidentally registered with the wrong club. Sportvisserij Nederland will always try to help you in cases like these by not passing the JeugdVISpas on to the club in question, provided that the JeugdVISpas in question is returned to Sportvisserij Nederland. A fishing club can refund the payment without any financial consequences.

The decision on whether or not to refund the contribution always lies with the board of the fishing club, and Sportvisserij Nederland has no say in this.

Please refer to the address finder for a club’s contact information.

Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl to resign your membership.

  • 11. When will I receive my JeugdVISpas?
The following applies to existing members:
If you pay prior to 5 December, you will receive the JeugdVISpas before 1 January. If you have issued a direct debit authorisation, you will receive the new JeugdVISpas around mid-December.

Sportvisserij Nederland assists many clubs in dealing with their membership records and sends the JeugdVISpasses three weeks after payment. Following payment, temporary proof of membership will be ready for you at Mijnsportvisserij.

A limited number of fishing clubs still issue the JeugdVISpas to their members themselves. Sportvisserij Nederland delivers the JeugdVISpasses to them in late November, and it is up to them to decide when they issue the JeugdVISpasses to their members. Some do this on their regular members’ evenings, others send them by post.

The following applies to new members:
Members who have recently ordered the JeugdVISpas online or in the shop and have received a Voorlopig Bewijs van Lidmaatschap (VBL; temporary proof of membership) for this purpose, can view the status of their order via ‘status aanvraag’ (status of your request).

A VBL is valid for one month and provides immediate permission to go fishing. You will generally receive the final JeugdVISpas within three weeks. Note: if you have ordered the JeugdVISpas online, you will automatically receive a VBL by e-mail. This may have ended up in your spam box.

If you have not received the JeugdVISpas within three weeks, please send an e-mail with your question, name and address details and VBL number to vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

  • 12. How do I cancel the JeugdVISpas?
Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl to indicate that you wish to resign your membership (the JeugdVISpas). The JeugdVISpas is the proof of membership of the club, which is printed on the front of the JeugdVISpas.

  • 15. How do I contact my fishing club?
The JeugdVISpas is the proof of membership of a club. Your club ensures that you can go fishing locally and continue to do so. In addition, the clubs hold activities for their members. Find the contact details via the address finder.
  • 16. My question is not included. What do I do?
If your question is not included, please send it to us at vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

Double payment

  • 1. I want to fish in club waters; how do I buy the Extra VISpas?
The VISpas provides permission to fish in many Dutch waters. For some waters, you will require the VISpas of a specific fishing club because their water is not shared nationally, or only partly shared nationally. This is clarified at www.visplanner.nl; in some cases, you are required to become a member of another fishing club as well.

Easily order the Extra VISpas from another club at www.vispas.nl by selecting ‘Extra VISpas’. The Extra VISpas can only be ordered if the VISpas has already been paid for.
  • 2. I am a member of more than one club. Can I get a refund?
Note: this does not apply to the JeugdVISpas.

You will receive the VISpas from every club you are a member of, because the VISpas is proof of membership of those clubs. You only have to pay the national contribution for one of these clubs, so it is much less expensive if you are a member of various clubs.
The contribution to the national organisation amounts to €15.00. If you become a member of a second club, you only have to pay an administration fee of €3.50.

Go to www.vispas.nl to immediately buy the extra VISpas, provided the VISpas has been paid for.
You can request the amount you paid extra to be refunded at www.vispas.nl; double payment. After completing the form and going through the three steps, the excess amount will be refunded into your account.
  • 3. How can I get my double payment back?
If you are you an angler and member of various clubs, you are not required to pay the national contribution more than once.

If we have the correct data in our system, it will show that you have purchased a Voorlopig Bewijs van Lidmaatschap (VBL; temporary proof of membership) at a new club and the double payment will automatically be refunded within three weeks. If we do not have your IBAN, you can request a refund of the excess amount here.

Complete the form and the three steps. The excess amount will be refunded to your account as soon as possible after completing the form.

  • 4. According to the form, the VISpas has not been paid. What do I do?
At this moment your VISpas is not set to ‘paid’ in the central membership records. It may be that your fishing club has not processed the payments.

It is best to ask the club to modify your profile into ‘paid’ in their central membership records. Alternatively, take a picture of both VISpasses and e-mail them to vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.
  • 5. Where can I go for another question about the payment?
If your question is not included, you can ask it at vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

List of fishing waters

  • 1. The Joint List or the VISplanner?
The VISplanner (www.visplanner.nl and the free VISplanner app) is legal permission if combined with the VISpas. If you have the VISplanner on your mobile telephone or tablet/laptop, you can demonstrate that you are permitted to fish at a certain location if you are checked. The paper Joint List of Dutch fishing waters is therefore no longer automatically included in the VISpas.

The VISplanner is continuously updated and uses a map to provide clear information about locations where you are permitted to fish. In addition, this is an environmentally-friendly solution and saves a lot of money which Sportvisserij Nederland can use to do more for you. We ask everyone to use the VISplanner. Please enter your choice at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.
  • 2. I would still like to receive the paper list. How can I go about this?
The Joint List of Dutch fishing waters is updated every three years. However, the new edition (2019 - 2020 - 2021) is no longer a standard supplement of the VISpas for environmental and financial reasons.

Over the past two years, anglers have been provided with the option to indicate whether they wish to use www.visplanner.nl and/or the VISplanner app or a physical list for angling. After all, not everyone has a smartphone.

It is no longer required to carry the paper version of the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters, because the VISplanner app is also legally valid and always up-to-date. Over 80% of the anglers already use it and will not miss the paper version.

If you prefer to bring the paper version with you when fishing and it is not included in VISpas, Sportvisserij Nederland provides the option of picking up a free copy at a VISpas point of sale or ordering it via our webshop.
A paper copy will remain available.
Please indicate if you would like to receive the booklet at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.
Indicate at www.mijnsportvisserij.nl if you would like to continue receiving the paper list.

    1.Go to www.mijnsportvisserij.nl.
    2.Register or log in.
3.Select ‘Viswaterlijst’ (Fish water list) from the menu (start by linking your VISpasses to your account under ‘VISpassen’ if required)
4.If necessary, move the slider to ‘Papier’ (Paper) and click on ‘Wijzigingen opslaan’ (Save changes).
  • 3. Why do I need the VISpas and a list of fishing waters?
The applicable regulations for fishing in Dutch inland waters are laid down in the Fisheries Act. In concise terms, it means that you are obliged to carry a written permit to fish. In most cases this is the VISpas, combined with a List of Fishing Waters. Fishing is permitted in waters included in the list. It is the angler’s responsibility to demonstrate whether he/she is permitted at a certain spot.
The VISplanner (www.visplanner.nl and the free VISplanner app) constitutes legal permission if combined with the VISpas. If you have the VISplanner on your mobile telephone or tablet/laptop, you can demonstrate that you are permitted to fish at a certain location if you are checked. The paper Joint List of Dutch fishing waters is therefore no longer automatically included in the VISpas.

The waters included in the List of Fishing Waters have been brought in by federations and clubs holding the fishing rights. With a few exceptions, fishing rights are connected to the land. The owner of a piece of land also holds the fishing rights. This fishing right can be leased, which is generally done by fishing clubs, which is why fishing rights are very fragmented, compared with land ownership. A different entity holding the fishing rights is involved for each water.

Sportvisserij Nederland focuses on making as much fishing water as possible available for their affiliated anglers. Generally speaking, the Sportvisserij Nederland clubs and federations have the fishing rights of 95% of all inland waters. About 90% of all inland waters are included in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters,

and our aim is to make the booklet as comprehensive as possible. With the introduction of the VISpas, additional efforts have been made to make more waters available and we have succeeded in doing so by adding dozens of waters. In recent years, new waters have been added to the lists with additions.

The key to achieving a nationwide VISpas lies with the entities that hold the fishing rights. In most cases, this is the fishing club of which you are a member, and, as a member, you have a say in what the clubs do. If these clubs all indicate that they share their waters, we have achieved what all anglers want: one single document to permit fishing everywhere.

In addition to the VISpas, the extra VISpas has been introduced for anglers who are members of various clubs. No national payment is required for the second, third and so on (extra) VISpas, which makes things considerably cheaper. Some anglers are members of as many as three clubs. A payment of €35.00 is required for the first club, and about €15.00 for the second and third one.
  • 4. The Joint List of Dutch fishing waters has become much more comprehensive; why?
This is simply because many more waters have been included in it, resulting in 25 percent more fishing spots for the same amount of money! Sportvisserij Groningen Drenthe and Sportvisserij Fryslân, for example, have included many more waters, so every VISpas holder can fish there without any further documents being required.
  • 5. Why have not all waters been included in the Joint List?
Clubs and federations share many waters, but sometimes keep small vulnerable waters exclusively available for their own members or within the federation permit. In addition, private fishing waters or waters under environmental protection are not accessible for anglers. This situation will not change, but we do hope and expect that the national list will be even further expanded in the future.

Waters added to the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters are immediately added in the VISplanner and digital Aanvulling (Supplement).
  • 6. Why is it not possible to fish anywhere you like?
Every person in the Netherlands requires written permission from the entity that holds the fishing rights. This usually takes the form of the VISpas combined with the national list of fishing waters. Many entities that hold fishing rights are present in the Netherlands; many of them who have added the fishing water to the national and/or federal list of fishing waters. This means that everyone is permitted to fish in these fishing waters.

Go to www.visplanner.nl to view all of the fishing waters that have been shared.

By devoting plenty of attention to sharing the water in the national list, Sportvisserij Nederland is trying to realise one single VISpas for everyone. Unfortunately, there are still clubs/private persons that are not interested in this. Some clubs reserve their club waters for their own members, instead of the general public. We try to prevent this as much as possible, but we do not succeed in each case, which may mean that anglers require various VISpasses.

Anglers can raise this during the general meeting to encourage clubs to share the fishing water, so that we can eventually come at one single VISpas. In view of the additions in recent years, this means that an increasing number of waters becomes available for anglers.

Should you nevertheless require two memberships, you can get a refund of any double payment at www.sportvisserijnederland.nl. The national contribution is thus required only once and fishing is cheaper in the case of several clubs.
  • 7. I have lost the lists. What do I do?
If you have lost your paper list of fishing waters (Joint List of Dutch fishing waters), you can re-order it through our webshop or get a copy at the local angling shop.

    No longer standard on paper
VISpas holders and new members will no longer automatically receive the Joint List on paper for environmental and financial reasons. The free VISplanner (available as a website and app) has been introduced as an alternative. The VISplanner indicates the locations where people are permitted and not permitted to fish in a very user-friendly manner, and the applicable conditions. The VISplanner is always up-to-date.

Over the past two years, anglers have been provided with the option to indicate whether they wish to use www.visplanner.nl and/or the VISplanner app or a physical list for angling. The current smartphone coverage rate is 90% and many members no longer need the Joint List.
  • 8. I have discovered an error in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters. What do I do?
If you have come across an error in the list or VISplanner, you can report it via visplanner@sportvisserijnederland.nl stating the name of the water and a map of the situation if possible.
  • 9. How can I share a water through the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters?
If your municipality/district water board or club wishes to share the water with the VISpas, you can make this known via visplanner@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

Please provide a description and the location of the body of water using a map or Google Maps. You can also inform us of any additional conditions.
  • 10. I have another question, where can I go?
If you do not see your question here, you can ask it at vispas@sportvisserijnederland.nl.

MeeVIStoestemming

  • 1. What exactly is the MeeVIStoestemming?
The MeeVIStoestemming (Fishing Along permit) is a written permit VISpas holders can use to bring someone along with them on an angling day trip to a nationally shared water included in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters. As a member of an affiliated fishing club (VISpas holder) you can take family, friends or acquaintances who are interested with you on an angling day trip and introduce angling to them. After all, you are the best ambassador for angling.

This allows VISpas holders to take someone on a fishing day trip as a gift, while people who are interested in angling are not immediately required to purchase the VISpas and become a member of a club.

The Fishing Along permit is only valid when the person fishing is accompanied by the VISpas holder, under the same conditions, except that fish caught by the guest must always be returned to the water. The Fishing Along permit is only valid during the day (1 hour before sunrise until 2 hours after sunset) and for a maximum of 2 rods.

The VISpas permits the holder to have several guests on one single day, but not the same person several times.

The Fishing Along permit is only valid for the waters included in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters, or the waters that are on the VISplanner and for which ‘VISpas’ is indicated as a required document.

Click here to directly order the Fishing Along permit via your MijnSportvisserij account
  • 2. Can anyone order the Fishing Along permit?
No, the Fishing Along permit can only be ordered for VISpas holders. Holders of a Kleine VISpas cannot order a Fishing Along permit.
    You can order at MijnSportvisserij.
  • 3. Is the Fishing Along permit free of charge?
Yes. VISpas holders can order the Fishing Along permit online and free of charge. This is, however, subject to various conditions. The Fishing Along permit entitles VISpas holders to bring one angler for a maximum of three times a year; this must be a different person every time.
  • 4. Can I order the Fishing Along permit online?
Yes. VISpas holders can order the Fishing Along permit online and for free here. Note: keep your VISpas number to hand. The Fishing Along permit permits you to bring one angler with you on a fishing trip for a maximum of three times a year.
  • 5. Can I go fishing on another day than indicated on the Fishing Along permit?
No. Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the date after the order has been completed (for example because the weather has changed or because it proves to be inconvenient for you or your fishing buddy after all). The Fishing Along permit permits every VISpas holder to take one person to go fishing for a maximum of three times a year. Tip: avoid disappointment and request the Fishing Along permit as close as possible to the scheduled fishing trip.
  • 6. What conditions apply to a person with the MeeVIStoestemming?
The Fishing Along permit is always ordered by the VISpas holder (your VISpas number is required for ordering). The idea of the permit is to introduce recreational fishing to people under the supervision of an experienced angler.
The Fishing Along permit permits one ‘co-angler’ to go fishing for one day with the VISpas holder free of charge.

The Fishing Along permit is only valid when fishing together with the VISpas holder and under identical conditions, but any fish caught by the guest must always be returned to the water. The Fishing Along permit is only valid during the day (1 hour before sunrise until 2 hours after sunset) and for a maximum of 2 rods. The Fishing Along permit is only valid for the waters included in the Joint List of Dutch fishing waters, or the waters that are on the VISplanner and for which ‘VISpas’ is indicated as a required document.

Miscellaneous

  • 1. What document do I need?
The VISpas is the proof of membership of a club. You will receive lists of fishing waters where you are permitted to fish. You must be a member of a club in order to obtain the VISpas. If you are not yet a member of a club, you can buy the VISpas next year at the fishing club and/or angling shop in your vicinity.

If you are under 14 on 1 January, you can fish using the JeugdVISpas or youth permit. In addition, you do not need a document if you are fishing with one rod under the supervision of an adult who has a valid written permit.

If you fish in a limited number of waters (mainly large rivers and shipping canals) using a single rod and designated types of bait, the Kleine VISpas will suffice. It is available for €14.00. In late November, Kleine VISpas holders will receive a letter from Sportvisserij Nederland concerning the Kleine VISpas. As before, anglers can apply for the Kleine VISpas via the Internet. Sportvisserij Nederland will issue additional information.

Establish the document you will need at VISpas check.
  • 2. What document do I need to go sea fishing?
Anglers also fish in the sea, where regulations other than in the inland waters apply. In general, the rules for sea fishing are simpler. It is important to know that the Fisheries Act distinguishes between three different sea fish areas: the ‘fishing zone’, ‘coastal waters’ and ‘sea area’. Different regulations apply in these areas.

In the fishing zone, the coastal waters and the sea area, you do not require permission from an entity that holds the rights or a permit for fishing with rods.

  • 3. Can I order the ZeeVISpas?
The ZeeVISpas has been discontinued as of 1/1/2019.

The ZeeVISpas no longer exists as from 2019. Did you have a ZeeVISpas last year? This message explains the consequences this has for you.
  • 4. Are there any day permits?
The Fisheries Act states that fishing in the Netherlands requires written permission from the entity that holds the fishing rights. Generally, this permission takes the form of the VISpas combined with the list of fishing waters.

VISpas holders are permitted to take three anglers with them to enjoy a fishing day trip three times a year.

It has, however, been proven impossible to purchase the VISpas for each individual of a group of inexperienced anglers attending a fishing day trip. A legal exception has thus been made: the day/week permit.

Affiliated fishing clubs can issue a day/week permit for anglers in their own waters. Anglers can use this written permit from the club to go fishing in club waters and according to the permit conditions established by them. In these cases, anglers do not require a Kleine VISpas or VISpas.

Not all clubs issue a day permit, so contact your local fishing club to for more information about day permits.
You can find the local fishing club at the Address finder.
